Christopher Campbell, Artist’s Statement, 1999.04.08
Exhibition: Arbitrary limitations, 100 words
Sources: Cézanne, Pollock, De Kooning, Twombly, Mitchell, Marden, Richter. Field structures, branching, chemoarchitecture, neural nets, axon bundles; sensitive chaos, complex/nonlinear systems, self-similar scaling.
Materials: white lead/linen (opacity), acrylic medium/polyester (translucency), alkyd resin/Mylar (transparency). Tools: bundled marsh grasses, charcoal batons, oilsticks, oils, scrapers, blades.
Photography: Nature’s light in extremis, long lenses, slow shutters, patient wanderings; revelations in organic drawing, synesthetic color chords, structural configurations, infinite scales; pellucid dyes, infinitesimal gradations, unspecifiable hues.
Drawing/painting: Lebensgefühl, body-feeling, sexual precipitation, kinesthetic set, motor tremble, recording affect. Proposition, retraction, suspension, erosion, connection, dissolution. Delicious indeterminacy; impossible consciousness mapped and mapping.
